MGC901 series Q&A
- Can city gas be used with the MGC901GP?
Our gas engines are designed to work with propane gas, and they do not support city gas.
Use propane gas that conforms to “JIS K 2240 Liquefied petroleum gases” Type 1 Number 1.
- Engine oil is required, but what type of oil should I use?
Use one of the following 4-stroke engine oils (lubricants) according to your usage environment.
(1) Oil grade API classification SE or higher (SH, SJ, and SL are most commonly used)
(2) Oil viscosity SAE 10W-30 (popular and with a wide range of uses)
- How much engine oil should I use?
Use around 0.4 L.
(Caution) The engine is not shipped with engine oil. Add engine oil before starting the engine.
- Can I use a gas cylinder with the MGC901GP that is not 5 kg?
Yes. However, use the included regulator.
The sale of gas cylinders is closely regulated under the LPG Act. Consult with the gas dealer before making a selection.
- How often does the oil need to be changed?
Change the oil 20 hours after first using the engine and then every 100 hours thereafter.
The oil gradually degrades as it is used. Change the oil instead of refilling it.
For long-term storage, change the oil about every 6 months, though this varies according to the storage environment.
- I heard that gasoline power generators may no longer work after being in long-term storage. Is this true for the MGC901GB or MGC901GP?
Gasoline begins to corrode at around 1 month, but the MGC901GB and MGC901GP use a gas fuel with very little corrosion concerns. Therefore, they should still start after being in long-term storage.
However, the cassette gas cylinder has an expiration date of around 7 years (starting from the date of manufacture shown on the bottom).
Propane gas cylinders have an inspection deadline, shown on the container. Consult with the gas dealer.
- I intend for the generator to be for emergency use during a disaster. However, I am thinking of running the engine once or so a year to make sure that it works, and so that I do not forget how to use it. What are some precautions regarding storage after the yearly test run?
Remove the gas cylinder and store it in a cool, dark place.
Clean each part (change the engine oil, clean the air cleaner element, etc.). Pull the recoil starter and stop when it shows increased resistance. For other items, clean each part (change the engine oil, clean the air cleaner elements, etc.).
- I want to replace the spark plug, but I do not have the designated one. Can I use the similar BP6HS (non resistor) from NGK or an equivalent product?
No. It will damage the generator and electrical devices. You must use the designated BPR6HS (resistor) plug.
- Can I operate the MGC901GP with a household pressure regulator (low pressure)?
No. When you use the MGC901GP generator, use the included pressure regulator (you cannot use the pressure regulator for the MGC2200G).
The connection to a propane gas container may need to be performed by a qualified person. For details, consult with your nearest gas dealer.
- How long is the hose included with the MGC901GP?
3 m. Use the included hose, and keep the gas cylinder and generator separated by at least 2 m (you cannot use a different hose).
- Can I connect two generators and run them in parallel?
Only if they are the same model. However, parallel operations require the corresponding cable set, which is sold separately.
When using the set, read the manual for the generator.
- Can the generator be started with a starter motor or started/stopped with external commands (contact signal)? Can it be started simply by pressing the start button?
The MGC901GB and MGC901GP can only be started with the recoil starter.
Therefore, remote operations by external signals are not supported.
- The operating temperatures of the MGC901GB are between 10°C and 40°C. Can it be used below 10°C?
No.
Moreover, do not heat the cassette gas cylinder. Doing so is very dangerous and can cause it to explode or rupture.
- Can I use the generator for measuring devices or medical devices?
Precision devices and electronic devices such as computers, measuring devices, and chargers require a more uniform voltage than that supplied by generators. Therefore, it may not work. Regarding medical devices, first check with the medical device manufacturer or a medical institution.
- Is it possible to replace just one cassette while the MGC901GB (cassette gas) is in operation?
Gas could leak during replacement. You must stop the engine and replace both cassettes at the same time.
- Can the generator be operated indoors?
CO (carbon monoxide), HC (hydrocarbon), and NOx (nitrogen oxides) are released with gasoline.
The exhaust gas could lead to death by poisoning. Do not use the generator indoors or areas with poor ventilation.
- Can the MGC901GB be used with gas cassettes not manufactured by Iwatani Corporation?
You must use a dedicated canister (LPG gas cylinder) with an Iwatani Cassette Gas label (except for Power Gold and Junior). If you use a different canister, gas could leak or prevent normal usage.
- How long can the generator be operated continuously?
The MGC901GB is rated for a 900 VA load and can be operated for about 1 hour.
However, with a 5 kg gas cylinder, the MGC901GP can be operated for about 10 hours.
- What is an inverter?
It modulates the frequency and stabilizes output. It allows the supply of high-quality electricity.
MGC1003 Q&A
- What kind of gasoline can be used? Where can I buy it?
Use automobile gasoline. (Do not mix oil with gasoline.)
- Engine oil is required, but what type of oil should I use?
Use one of the following 4-stroke engine oils (lubricants) according to your usage environment.
(1) Oil grade API classification SE or higher (SH, SJ, and SL are most commonly used)

- How much engine oil should I use?
Use around 0.4 L.
(Caution) The engine is not shipped with engine oil. Add engine oil before starting the engine.
- Should I use regular or high-octane gasoline?
Because octanes vary, use regular gasoline.
- How long can it operate with a full fuel tank?
It is rated for 1000 VA output and can operate continuously at this output for about 5 hours.
- The generator engine does not start. What could be the cause?
There are several potential factors as shown below.
(1) Check that there is the specified quantity of engine oil. If the amount of oil is insufficient, the oil sensor will operate, and the engine cannot be started.
(2) We recommend using freshly purchased gasoline. If you use old gasoline or gasoline that was not stored properly, the engine may not start or operate well.
- Can the generator be operated indoors?
CO (carbon monoxide), HC (hydrocarbon), and NOx (nitrogen oxides) are released with gasoline.
The exhaust gas could lead to death by poisoning. Do not use the generator indoors or areas with poor ventilation.

- Can I connect two generators and run them in parallel?
Only if they are the same model. However, parallel operations require the corresponding kit, which is sold separately.
When using the kit, read the manual provided with it.
